Amazon Kindle Steps Up A Notch

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Amazon’s main home page is now touting the Amazon Global Wireless Kindle for $279 (pre-orders). Wow. At first, my Apple iTablet/iPad/iWhatever-biased self was thinking what’s this bullshit?

What’s getting me here is that they’re running it over a 3G connection. I mean, there’s a US version you can buy now for $20 less but I didn’t realize they’d incorporated that into the device. Pretty cool.

Still, there’s little doubt that I will NOT be rushing in to buy one. It’s just to single-use and plain. I’m sorry, it may be readable and annotatable and all that but I don’t want to shell out several hundred dollars for a glorified book reader. The text looks boring, there are no graphics really, and it’s just e-paper all over again…just the boring practical kind, not the fancy-assed SciFi kind.

Honestly, assuming Apple manages to pull it together, if they include 3G support and WiFi and make it a fancier iPhone with handwriting capabilities if you’re using a stylus for notes, it’s a win-win. Outside of exploding batteries, having one of those iPad suckers available to pull out in class or in the office or on the road is so much better than a little text reader.

Sorry Amazon, wireless coverage aside, I’d rather invest that $279 in a $499-599 iPad in a few months. :)
